Ten days to go until my first lecture!

And I’m really excited. And just a bit stressed by all the new skills I’m having to learn. Fortunately, I’m not alone. The start of this academic year is tough for everyone as the University opens its brand new MediaCityUK building.

It’s described as a unique digital learning, teaching and research space and it’s very different from the University’s current home for media students….

So it’s quite a leap to this….

One of the University’s lecturers, Helen Keegan, has taken a fantastic set of pictures of the new building.  For architectural historians of the future, this is what the building looked like before the students got their grubby hands on it.

And I’m told the students on the induction courses are wide-eyed with amazement when they enter the building, not quite able to believe they’re going to be studying in this kind of environment.  Mind you, it doesn’t take much to impress students.  A lecturer at Manchester University tells me they’ve just painted one of the stairwells and the students are really impressed with that!

It would have been good to record some audio of the first impressions for the archive but, as a second best, I’ve gathered together some of the enthusiastic tweets from students and staff.

Can’t wait to start properly at @UOSMediaCity. Best facilities in the country for Journalism, no doubt about it

Ben Shirley has been blogging about the University’s relocation to MediaCityUK.  He’s currently coordinating all of the MediaCity related activity for the University’s College of Science and Technology.

University of Salford at MediaCityUK: week 3

Week 3 since I moved into our MediaCityUK building and things are really coming together. Students are arriving all week for an induction and tour – first they’ve seen of the place from the inside. They’ll be back to start classes on 4th October and that is our deadline for all systems to be ready for teaching.
So, that’s a quick summary of the vibe at the University ahead of its official opening on the 4th October.  I think it’s fantastic that they’re opening on schedule.  It’s a mammoth task to relocate a big institution and eventually it comes down to force of will.  There will be teething problems and this first term will be a bit chaotic inevitably but I think it’s going to be fun and chaos is part of the creative process that the new building is supposed to inspire!

I’m proud to be a very, very small part of it.
You students coming to study @UOSMediaCity here at #MediaCityUK are going to love your building! Anyone wish they were a student again?!
